Volkswagen introduced the "New Beetle" in 2003 many years after the original classic air cooled VW Beetle was abandoned. The New Volkswagen Beetle convertible reminds us of the classic VW Beetle but it is vastly different in design.

The New Beetle Convertible
The New Beetle convertible, very unlike the classic VW Beetle convertible, is a much easier convertible top to install. The original Volkswagen Beetle convertible top had a classic convertible top design no less complex than a Rolls Royce's. All classic Volkswagen Beetle convertible top frames (1979 and earlier) had interior headliner, padding between the headliner and the top, and at least one wood convertible top tacking bow to receive staples. We do provide a nice installation manual for the air cooled VW Beetle convertible top installation however and many of our customers have installed their own headliner, padding, top etc. !

The new Beetle convertible top installs without glue, stapling or sewing. The removal of this Beetle convertible top is the prying of seals, the unfastening of convertible top attachment screws, the drilling out of top attachment rivets. The installation of the simpler (compared to the old Beetle top) new Beetle convertible top is more readily within the abilities of a patient and handy person.

It is conceivable that the owner installer may change her mind about self installation. In that case we would supply names of installers. However, as mentioned, the owner of the new Beetle who is reasonably handy (not afraid of using a pop rivet gun for example) should be able to install the Beetle convertible top.

Beetle Convertible Top Fabrics
The original Beetle convertible top fabric (on the new Beetle convertible) was German Sonnenland canvas. This is a 'high end' convertible top fabric. Some owners may wish to keep their Beetle convertible original but others may wish to switch to a less expensive (but equally attractive) vinyl top. Sailcloth vinyl convertible top fabric was designed to imitate canvas but is a much less expensive convertible top fabric than the original canvas.

New Beetle Convertible Top Packages
Our packages for the do-it-yourself installer include everything needed. We supply the upholsterer's pry/push tool for removing and replacing the seals that attach to the Beetle convertible top frame. We supply a pop rivet gun and a supply of aluminum pop rivets to replace those that are drilled out of the old Beetle convertible top. And we include the well illustrated, and patiently tutorial, Beetle convertible top installation manual. A pair of new convertible top hold down cables is highly recommended and is included in the Beetle convertible top package specials.

The "old" Beetle:
The "old" or original Beetle convertible was manufactured until 1979. Nicely restored classic air cooled Beetle convertibles are now collector cars often fetching upwards of $30,000 in auctions ! And parts and 'how to' instructions are readily available. We do publish a convertible top installation manual for the classic Beetle convertible. We also supply every part that goes under and into the old (classic) Beetle convertible top. While more complex in its restoration than the newer Beetle modular top this air cooled Beetle convertible is, while a longer one, a doable job.
