Choosing Your Toyota Solara Convertible Top
We offer the Toyota Solara convertible top in three fabrics: Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl, Haartz Stayfast Canvas, and German Sonnenland Canvas (available only for Solaras dating from 2004 on). Here's what you need to know about each material before you make your purchase:Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl: Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl is a two-ply composite with a PVC outer layer and a cotton inner lining. Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl is our most popular convertible top fabric. This fabric is original to most American cars made before 1993. Pinpoint refers to the little dots on the vinyl surface. If you take care of a Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl convertible top, it can easily last 10 years.
Haartz Stayfast Canvas: Haartz Stayfast is the American substitute for the German canvases used in Mercedes, Porsche, BMW, as well as some Mustang and Lebaron models. The original Toyota Solara convertible top was made of Haartz Stayfast Canvas. This canvas is a little richer looking than the vinyl. It's also a little harder to clean. Stayfast canvas has a canvas outer layer and a preshrunk cotton inner layer. The two are bonded by a butyl rubber core, which makes the fabric last a very long time. Stayfast Canvas has both better static and dynamic wear ratings than vinyl toppings.
German Sonnenland Canvas: This luxurious Solara convertible top fabric is available only for Solaras produced in or after 2004. German Sonnenland Canvas is used in many Mercedes, Porsche, BMW and other convertibles. German Sonnenland canvas is a three-ply material made of a twill weave outer layer, a rubber inner layer and a dobby weave lining. Of these three Solara convertible top fabrics, this is the most durable and longest-lasting. Sonnenland Canvas has an approximate 20 percent greater wear rating than Haartz Stayfast.
Can I install the Toyota Solara convertible top myself?
Yes! The Toyota Solara requires a two-part convertible top, meaning there's a main top and a rear window section, called the "curtain." The two convertible top sections are integrated during the installation process. If you can use an air-driven staple gun, and are patient and methodical, you are very likely to be able to install the Solara top. Installing your own Solara convertible top can save you hundreds of dollars in restoration labor costs!
We offer a profusely illustrated convertible top manual, now in its fourth edition. This covers, in detail, all the steps for do-it-yourself convertible top installation. In particular, the manual applies to cars, like the Toyota Solara, with a two-part convertible top. You may purchase the manual to review it before purchasing a convertible top package. We would then pro-rate future purchase of the convertible top when it is ordered.
In most cases, our convertible top packages include everything you need to install your own Solara convertible top. (Convertible-top frame seals must be ordered separately if required.)
There is no sewing involved in installing a two-part convertible top, such as the Solara top, but you will have to be comfortable with a staple gun, manipulating convertible-top fabric, and applying contact cement. Our convertible-top packages include stainless-steel staples and the very best grade of contact cement with brush. To start shopping, click on a link at the right.
