1979 Fiat Convertibles:
Fiat convertibles went unchanged for 19 years! Then in 1979, the
Fiat convertible soft tops were slightly restyled. If you're
ordering a 1979 Fiat convertible, be sure to specify if your Fiat
convertible is from early 1979 or late 1979. Not sure? Here's how
to tell:
The Early-1979 Fiat
Convertible Top:
If you have an early-1979 Fiat convertible, the top's front corners
will be square as in the sketch shown on the left.

The Late-1979 Fiat
Convertible Top:
If you have a late-1979 Fiat convertible, then your Fiat soft top
will have a rounded front as shown in the illustration on the left.

Choosing Your Fiat Convertible Top Fabric
Fiat convertible tops come in two fabrics: Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl
and Haartz Stayfast Canvas. Here's what you need to know about each
one before you make your purchase.
Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl: A popular Fiat soft top fabric,
Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl is a two-ply composite with a PVC outer layer
and a cotton inner lining. Haartz Pinpoint Vinyl is original to
many Fiat convertibles. Pinpoint refers to the little dots on the
vinyl surface. If you take care of a Haartz pinpoint vinyl
convertible top, it can easily last 10 years.
Haartz Stayfast Canvas: If you're looking to upgrade your
vinyl top, consider a Fiat convertible top made of Haartz Stayfast
Canvas. This fabric is the American substitute for the elegant
German canvases used in Mercedes, Porsche, BMW. Haartz Stayfast
Canvas is a three-ply composite material made of an acrylic square
weave outer fabric, a butyl rubber core, and a cotton lining. The
butyl rubber core promises to make Haartz Stayfast Canvas last a
very long time. This canvas is a little richer looking than the
vinyl. It's also a little harder to clean. Stayfast Canvas has both
better static and dynamic wear ratings than any vinyl top.

Brief Fiat Convertible History
The first Fiat was made at the venerable Fiat plant in Turin Italy.
It was, technically, a roadster: an open car with large wooden
spoked wheels. Eight of these Fiat roadsters were manufactured! By
1912 the factory was producing what could be called Fiat
convertibles. About 2000 of these Fiat convertible cars were
produced between 1912 and 1914. By the 1930s Fiat was producing
touring cars and convertibles (cabriolets) in much greater numbers
and Fiat was in the automobile mainstream. The still very popular
Fiat 124 Spider roadster was introduced in 1966 and manufactured
until 1985 with most of these sport convertibles exported to the
United States. There were barely any changes in this Fiat
convertible body style for its entire run. We do note a minor
modification in the Fiat convertible top which was made in the 1979
convertible. 1979 Fiat convertible owners are advised to look at
both links (see various Fiat convertible links at the right) which
contain "1979" to be sure of getting the original Fiat convertible
top replacement.
