Original Patterns: Our Mazda RX-7 tops are made from original dealer patterns. They are not "copies of copies." Our tops have the built in padding, front drip rail, and the rain guards which attach to the drain hoses. We offer the replacement tops in pinpoint vinyl and Stayfast canvas fabrics.
Fabrics: The original RX-7 top fabric was very similar to the pinpoint vinyl: it had tiny diamond 'pips' as the surface grain. Pinpoint has tiny hemispheres instead. The diamond grain fabric is not available. Stayfast canvas has an elegant canvas outer layer and a butyl rubber central core. Front and Rear Top Sectoins: Our replacement top consists of both sections of the top, the front 'Targa' and the rear.
Try to Re-use Rear Window Parts: The back window of the RX-7 is suspended in a steel framework. The framework is transferred from the old top to the new and the window is fitted to the framework. If you are going to do your own installation and cannot "rope in" the window then this is a job that any automotive glass shop can perform in about a half hour of labor.
If you require a new window framework then one is available: it is listed under accessories. In any case the old glass and seal must be re-used
Our Installation Manual: We offer a 16 page 8 1/2 x 11 illustrated step by step installation manual. This is a step by step manual specifically for the Rx-7 convertible top removal and installation. This was written especially for the first time installer and elaborates all removal and installation steps. The work involves stapling or tacking and the use of contact cement and a couple of rivets or metal screws. The most difficult part is the transfer of the rear window frame which is very doable for the handy person. The glass is installed by manipulating the window seal over the lip of the steel window frame. This involves a common procedure called "roping in." It is something that any auto glass shop can do.
Rain Guards and Drain Hoses: Rain guards are attached to the new top behind the door jambs. They attach to the drain hoses. New rain guards are supplied with our tops.
Hoses can generally be re-used several times. They are listed with accessories if needed. If your hoses are shot you can order our top with new hoses pre-attached to save some labor. Or you can order, separately, the drain hose attachment kit (new hoses plus accessories and instructions for full installation.)
Top Fasteners: Part of the installation work involves locating the snap locations from the receptacles on the body to the top fabric (rubbing with chalk and transferring the locations.)
Headliner: We offer the headliner for the convertible interior roof. It includes the plastic section below the back window sewn in. Also included is sufficient yardage for the front section. The other plastic piece must be transferred from the old headliner. The headliner is listed with "Accessories."
Top Boot: We offer replacement boots in leather grained boot vinyl. Our boot comes with the 15 tenax fasteners required.
