Important Information | New: Custom Fit Car Covers
Fabrics:
Original tops were black, or dark blue Stayfast canvas. We also offer pinpoint vinyl tops which afford considerable savings.
Generally, Stayfast Canvas outwears vinyl, typically by about 50%. This is due to the bonding process (between the outer layer and the inside cotton layer) which, in the case of Stayfast involves a thick butyl rubber core.
We can have tops made in other colors, besides the original black and dark blue, but there will be a premium charged. Please inquire at support@mtmfg.com.
Headliner:
The headliner is the inside fabric ceiling. It is a separate part and is listed with ‘Accessories.’ A headliner which is in good condition can be re-installed under a new top.
Classic Two Part Tops:
These tops, as originally designed, are two part tops, similar in installation to most American tops. The rear window section is called the Curtain. The Main Top covers everything from the rear bow that is over the back window to the windshield. You may read how these tops are designed and installed in our top install manual summary. It is at the blue link at the bottom of this page. The top installs with staples or tacks, and contact cement. There is no sewing. Approximately half of our "two part top" customers are do-it-yourslef installers.
Hold down cables:
Cables are used to attach the top to the frame at the sides. They thread into special pockets on the inner sides of the top before attachment. New cables are recommended with each new top.
Webbing:
Webbing attached to the top bows under the top serves to build out and support the top. Webbing can be re-used through an average of two tops.
Tack strips:
Tack strips are embedded into the intermediate bow corners and into the rear top bow (above rear window) of the top frame. They receive staples that hold the top, curtain and the pads to the bows.
Please inquire about restoration of the rear base line tacking bow set. The base line tacking bows are not part of our basic tacking strip set.
Package Specials:
We list restoration packages which include everything needed in 90% of restorations: top, hold down cables, tack strips, webbing, and the install manuals.
Hydraulics:
We now stock hydraulic cylinders, motor-pumps, and hoses for your convertible tops. All are made to OEM specifications. Each can be ordered separately; however, when ordering hydraulic cylinders we recommend replacing both. The chances are that both hydraulic cylinders were manufactured at the same time: if one is on its way out the other may follow. If the top is raised and one hydraulic cylinder is working harder than the other the result over time can lead to a slightly bent convertible top frame. The replacement of both hydraulic cylinders will ensure that the top raises and lowers symmetrically.
Systems for this car take Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) and have a 5 year warranty when used with this fluid. Brake fluid should not be used as it voids the warranty. We also offer an installation manual when ordered.
The 12 volt motor-pumps include a mounting bracket with rubber grommets to reduce vibration.
We also offer a rebuilding service for motor-pumps. Not all are repairable, but it is less expensive to have one rebuilt than to buy a new one. The motor-pump would need to be sent to us for evaluation. Hoses come with all new fittings and are made specifically to fit your car.
